PROGRAM HISTORY

North Florida HIDTA was established to address significant drug trafficking challenges in northeastern Florida. This initiative is part of the national HIDTA Program, coordinated by the ONDCP, aiming to enhance and coordinate drug control efforts among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

North Florida HIDTA Established

The North Florida HIDTA (High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area) was designated by ONDCP and established in 2001, led by Director Ed Williams. It was created to address the significant drug trafficking challenges in northeastern Florida and to coordinate efforts among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking and related crime in the region.

Alachua and Columbia Counties Added

Alachua and Columbia Counties received HIDTA designation in 2006.

North Florida HIDTA Director Ed Williams Retires

The North Florida HIDTA founding director retires in 2012.
